The Cavity 411
You have heard your dentist’s warnings about cavities from a young age. Avoiding sugar and brushing your teeth are general good prevention tips. Do you know exactly what a cavity is? Cavities are also known as tooth decay. This happens when bacteria produce acids that destroy your tooth’s enamel.
Cavities can form based on what we eat, how we take care of our teeth and the fluoride content in our water/toothpaste.
There are three types cavities to be aware of:
Coronal cavities, which are the most common, occur on the chewing surfaces of our teeth or in between teeth.
Root cavities are a type of cavity where the gums have receded (pulled back), which leaves an exposed part of the tooth. This now exposed area is more susceptible to cavities.
Recurrent decay is the third type of cavity. This is when around any existing fillings or crowns, plaque builds up easily.
Remember, cavities are no joke! If left untreated, they can destroy your tooth and leave you with an infection or need for abstraction. So be sure to take good care of your teeth and check in with your dentist regularly.
